Minnesota is also home to a number of great wedding venues, from rustic barns to elegant ballrooms. As a husband and wife photography team that has shot over 100 weddings in Minnesota, we can attest to the fact that getting married in the land of 10,000 lakes can be truly special. If you're looking for a place to have an unforgettable wedding, Minnesota has so much to offer!

In this Minnesota WEdding guide, we will cover:

  • How to plan a wedding in Minnesota
  • Best wedding venues in Minnesota
  • When is the best time to get married in Minnesota?
  • Where to have your engagement session in Minnesota

  1. Start dreaming about the type of wedding you want to have. When do you want to get married, what type of vibe do you want to have? Do you want to get married in the Minnesota winter? Are you envisioning a summer wedding? Consider the season and general location for where you want to get married and start narrowing down what your vision is for the day.
  2. Start researching and touring wedding venues. Minnesota is a great state to get married in because there is so much variety in venues and locations to get married. Do you want to get  married at a barn venue such as Ivory North? Are you considering eloping on the North Shore in Duluth? The possibilities are endless and so once you set your date and officially book your venue, the rest of the planning can start happening!
  3. Book your photographer! As wedding photographers, we can attest that booking your photographer is really important to do well in advance. We tend to book anywhere from 6-18 months in advance and have limited availability, especially during busy season. The sooner you can nail down your photographer the better! Minnesota has so many talented photographers and so you have lots of options, but we book up fast!
  4. Hire your wedding planner. Trust us when we say hiring a wedding planner will be the best thing you do early on. Hiring a local Minnesota wedding planner will help you get the best vendors and provide an incredible experience. We have some amazing recommendations if you're not sure who to hire to help you plan your wedding in Minnesota.
  5. Choose your other big vendors. Catering, florist, and all the other big vendors are important to nail down early on when planning your wedding because they also book well in advance.
  6. Plan your timeline and wedding details. Working with your planner and photographer on these items will be key to help bring to life the vision you are having. It's so important to include your planner and photographer to ensure that the there is enough time for everything and also they can help bring perspective and ideas to the table that maybe you didn't think of originally. It's a team effort and working together on this will help ensure things go smoothly.
  7. Apply for your marriage license. In order to apply for a marriage license, you will need to do it in the Minnesota County you are getting married in. The application process is pretty seamless and costs anywhere from $100 to $300 depending on the county.

Spring is a popular time to get married in Minnesota. The weather is starting to warm up and the flowers are in bloom. Summer is the most popular time to get married in Minnesota. The weather is warm and sunny, and there are a variety of outdoor venues to choose from. If you are planning on getting married in the Summer, make sure you look into venues that offer air conditioning. Also, it still can rain in the summer so having indoor and outdoor options is good to consider just in case!

Fall is a beautiful time to get married in Minnesota. The leaves are changing color and the air is crisp. However, Fall can also be a very busy time of year, so it may be difficult to find a venue or vendors that are available.

Winter is a unique time to get married in Minnesota. You can have a winter wonderland wedding complete with snow and ice sculptures. However, Winter can also be very cold and unpredictable weather-wise. Make sure you are prepared for the possibility of a blizzard on your wedding day!
